While the walls of Debre Berhan Selassie host the most vibrant ecclesiastical artwork in the country, it’s the ceiling that will capture your imagination. This royal compound, known as Kuskuam, is simply captivating. The History that makes Gondar a World Heritage sites can be breathed in at the restored Palace of Fasiladas, the Royal Enclosure’s oldest and most impressive castle. Made of roughly hewn stones it shows an unusual synthesis of Indian, Mediterranean and Aksumite influences.
Gondar has been implementing its Capital Investment Plan, which has resulted in infrastructure projects such as cobblestone paving where more than 2,000 new jobs have been created for young people. Most projects are labour-intensive and the formation of MSE’s is strongly encouraged which benefits disadvantaged groups in the community.
A liquid waste project will soon be finalised with the support of the German Development Cooperation. Street lighting and beautification projects are contributing to residents’ and visitors’ comfort. A good tourist sector is one of the strengths of the municipality and a new cadastre offers access to plots of land. The city’s new address and street naming system will also soon be finalised. A new local development plan, based on the structure plan of the city, has been developed for Arada-Piazza. Efficient institutional arrangements resulting from Business Process Reengineering and the participation of citizens in decisions are part of the city’s good governance. Finally, 3,440 condominium units have been built or will soon be ready and 25 shops are ready to establish businesses.
The University of Gondar is one of the oldest institutions in Ethiopia with faculties in: Law, Management, Applied Natural Science (including the first Biotechnology department in the country), Medical Science, Business & Economics, Applied Social Science and Tourism Management, which is also unique in Ethiopia.
Additionally, the TVET college offers training in 35 occupations and has close ties with the private sector.
